Creating a Data Management Plan

Many federal funding agencies, including National Science Foundation, are requiring that grant applications contain data management plans for projects involving data collection. To support researchers in meeting this requirement, ANR Communication Services is providing guidance on creating such plans.

The purpose of this plan is to describe the methods you will use to gather, store, share and preserve your data.  We have gathered some information to help you create your plan.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) requires that investigators share with other researchers, at no more than incremental cost and within a reasonable time, the primary data, samples, physical collections and other supporting materials created or gathered in the course of work under NSF grants.

Proposals submitted to NSF on or after January 18, 2011 must include a supplementary document of no more than two pages labeled "Data Management Plan". This supplementary document should describe how the proposal will conform to NSF policy on the dissemination and sharing of research results.

For specific details of NSF’s policy and its implementation, please see Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) Chapter II.C.2.j
